Did Predestination Fail Before It Started?

I am rarely so divided on my experience with a film. I thought this film was setting up a time travel thriller but it really isn’t, it has been given the “action” genre but that is not accurate. Nothing of interest happens in the first hour of this 90 minute movie; I was wondering when the plot that was going to be gotten to and I will admit the last third is by far the best part of this film as there were some interesting ideas presented but ones which I wish had been expanded more upon; like if the film had opened with the thing that feels like the secret premise it ends with. I also feel like the “secret premise” was foreshadowed a little too hard in a time travel film where there are limited twists that can happen, so I was a little disappointed that it felt so obvious but that could just be my experience. Despite that disappointment the consequences of the idea where interesting but unfortunately not explored and left to my imagination.

On a separate note I like how it was filmed but it was hard to understand what was being said at times, which is partially due to an intentional character choice but maybe they should have learned from the Bane voice fiasco and made listening less of a challenge.

A film that has stuck in my mind more than I was expecting, that dares to ignore its exciting premise and which is basically 2/3 back story but then somehow turns the film and my entire perception of it around and then abruptly ends. I wish I liked this film more, it just lost too much of my good will in the first 2 acts. If it was just the last act, this would be a pretty decent short film.

Score:
