Civil War follows the journey 4 journalists across America to cover parts of the ongoing conflict. The film isn’t really about the civil war itself but more on the collateral impact: how people change, and how society adapts to a world in chaos.
I see this film as sort of artsy, as in it is focused more on the journey than the destination. Those sorts of artsy films are not ones that I gravitate towards but Civil War handles this very well with character progression and action, which others of that style don’t manage in a way that I find satisfying.
I liked Civil War, because it did a great job at making me empathise with characters and their struggles. The film is also interspersed with some fairly intense moments, particularly the third act which resonated with me. However, I felt certain parts were quite slow and other good scenes I would’ve liked if they had been held onto longer. Part of me wishes that the politics of the war itself were more explored but I acknowledge that that would’ve detracted from the beauty of the small view of a greater whole.
